I cringed looking up at my calendar earlier this month. Bright highlighter marked off every Friday and Saturday in January, and as I first thought, also my life. How would I handle back-to-back days of class on what was supposed to be my downtime from a very busy job?
Surprisingly well, I found out, because I love my class.
I’m taking Organizational Communication, which ties in nicely to what I do. It’s my first elective and it’s a good one. Unlike some classes, which are more lecture based, this one is very discussion oriented and we’re able to share what works, what doesn't, and speculate what the future of communication will look like as demographics and technology change. As I told my colleagues, it’s kind of like a think tank for communications professionals.
While the subject matter is interesting, the best part is that I’m able to make connections with other students. I found out one woman will be going to Germany with me. Another student was in my management class. And two others work at my company and one knows many of the same people I do. What I thought was going to be a drag on my weekend fun (aka “my weekend naps” – don’t judge: school, a whale of a commute and a full-time gig can get tiring) has turned out to be one of the most enjoyable parts of my week. But it goes by fast. About three weeks into the semester and we’re practically done!
