Academic Affairs lists 2002-2003 goals

Continuing the work of strengthening academic priorities, goals for Academic Affairs for the 2002-2003 academic year have been determined and are listed below.

Academic Affairs goals for 2002-2003

  1. With faculty and deans and directors, begin examining academic priorities.  Work on assessing academic programs according to these criteria would follow.  In cooperation with the Faculty Affairs Committee, Academic Affairs will begin a discussion of criteria with the Senate in the fall.
  1. Strengthen the full-time faculty and their contributions to academic excellence, scholarship and service by adding 20 new faculty this year and each of the following four years, pending approval of the related SIP.
  1. Make significant progress toward faculty compensation equity with our eight comparison institutions.
  1. Begin identification of aspiration group.
  1. Complete, by Jan. 31, 2003, the search for the associate vice-president for Academic Affairs (interim incumbent: Dr. Angie Barretta-Herman)
  1. Complete, by April 30, 2003, the search for the director of Graduate Programs in Software (incumbent Dr. Bernie Folz).
  1. Provide support for the incoming deans in Law, Business, and Professional Psychology.
  1. Improve mentoring of new faculty in order to improve retention.  Teaching seminars for new faculty will begin in the fall.
  1. Complete the Higher Learning Commission North Central Association Self-Study by June 30, 2003.  This effort, chaired by Dr. Angie Barretta-Herman and Dr. John Kemper, has membership from all facets of the university.
  1. Continue progress on stewardship of resources with the help of controls to be implemented with the Business Office.
  1. Under the leadership of the UPPC, develop a plan for core curriculum review.
  1. Improve the physical space of Academic Affairs for better protection of records.  Plan the eventual imaging of faculty documents.
  1. Begin a comprehensive review of Faculty Handbook policies.
  1. With the dean and directors, review and implement improvements stemming from the external review of Academic Counseling by February 2003. 
  1. By Dec. 31, 2002, complete the standardization of graduate academic policies.  Extend the pilot program of the College of Business to other graduate programs by June 30, 2003.
  1. Prepare materials to achieve preliminary ABA accreditation and re-accreditation by APA by May 1, 2003.  Prepare for ABET by fall 2002.
  1. Strengthen Academic Affairs visibility in Minneapolis.
  1. Support diversity initiatives, including the review of the undergraduate diversity requirement.
  1. Work with Faculty Affairs Committee, the Committee on Teaching Evaluation and the University Senate to strengthen and improve the policies on faculty evaluation and removal for cause.
  1. Facilitate the beginning of the interprofessional clinic.
  1. Support at least three academic program reviews and enhance assessment activities.
  1. Assist in the VPAA search.
