Authors to discuss new book on mistakes of leadership May 3

The University of St. Thomas Department of Organization Learning and Development will host a presentation and book-signing by the faculty co-authors of the newly published book Breaking the Code of Silence: Prominent Leaders Reveal How They Rebounded From Seven Critical Mistakes (Roman and Littlefield Publishing Group: Taylor Trade Publishing, 2005).

The presentation, free and open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, in Thornton Auditorium of Terrence Murphy Hall on St. Thomas ’ downtown Minneapolis campus, 1000 LaSalle Ave.  A reception and book-signing will be held in the Schulze Grand Atrium of St. Thomas’ nearby School of Law.

Dr. Mitchell Kusy and Dr. Louellen Essex will discuss their book, which is based on research and interviews with well-known leaders whose costly blunders have made headlines. The book examines seven common mistakes, debunks myths surrounding mistake recovery, and identifies strategies for “rebounding” from near-fatal errors.

Kusy is an organization development consultant and a professor in the School of Education’s graduate Department of Organization Learning and Development. A 2005 Fulbright Scholar and 1998 Minnesota Organization Development Practitioner of the Year, Kusy previously headed the leadership development function for American Express. He is now a consultant to both Fortune 500 and nonprofit organizations.

Essex is an organization development consultant specializing in leadership, team building, conflict resolution and strategic planning. She is an adjunct faculty member at St. Thomas and also teaches at the University of Minnesota Executive Development Center.

Kusy and Essex’s 1999 book, Fast Forward Leadership (London: Financial Times-Prentice Hall), made the “What Corporate America is Reading” best-seller list according to Knight-Ridder Tribune News Service.
