The University of St. Thomas is strongly committed to service-learning for the development of civic responsibility and engagement in its students. Workshops are offered twice yearly for faculty to expand their knowledge of service-learning and to develop syllabi incorporating meaningful service experiences.

The summer workshop will be held June 19-22 and 28. This workshop will bring together a group of faculty to review and revise their own syllabi and to serve as “consultants” to one another. The goal is to integrate meaningful service experiences in courses that represent a broad range of academic disciplines throughout the university.

The workshop will include:

  • Pre-workshop reading of articles on service-learning and curriculum design
  • Discussion of curriculum-design issues
  • Pre-workshop submission of at least one syllabus with a service-learning component or one syllabus that would adapt well to service-learning
  • Critique and evaluation of other participants’ integration of service-learning
  • Revision of one’s own syllabus to reflect and incorporate the “best practices” of service-learning

The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday, June 19-22, with a final lunch meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 28, to review and discuss final syllabi and the service-learning projects that have been developed. Participants will receive a stipend of $500 following workshop completion.

All faculty are encouraged to apply.
