Dr. Jorge Garcia and Dr. Laura Garcia will lead a Catholic Studies discussion on “John Paul II as Philosopher and Teacher” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the Fireside Room. Pizza will be served after the discussion. All are welcome.

Laura will begin the discussion with a treatment of Pope John Paul II’s view of marriage and family as opportunities to develop special forms of interpersonal love. After background comments on the personalism of Brentano, Meinong, Husserl and Scheler, Jorge will discuss two major claims of John Paul II:

  • Christianity reveals humanity to itself
  • The proper response to a person is love

Jorge, a professor of philosophy at Rutgers, has taught at the University of Notre Dame and at Georgetown. He currently is a research fellow in Boston University’s Institute on Race and Social Division. His work has appeared in dozens of philosophical journals, collections and reference works as well as in the magazines: New Oxford Review and First Things.

Laura, who holds an appointment in philosophy at Rutgers (and at one time taught in the Philosophy Department here at St. Thomas) has published many articles in philosophy journals. She is co-founder of University Faculty for Life and of Women Affirming Life. Laura and Jorge are married and have four children.
