Angela Gilman and Renee Kraft have been named recipients of UST’s Outstanding Communication Majors Award. Gilman received one of seven teaching assistantships at the University of Colorado — Boulder. The assistantship provides full tuition in the master’s program as well as a teaching stipend.

Dr. James Hundley, Modern and Classical Languages Department, presented a paper, “Teaching International Business: The Informal Economy in Latin America,” at CIBER 2001: The Conference on Language, Communication and Global Management March 30 in San Diego. CIBER is a consortium of 12 universities around the United States that serve as Centers for International Business and Research.

Dr. Ann Johnson, Psychology Department, was invited to speak at an annual symposium sponsored by the Simon Silverman Phenomenology Center at Duquesne University March 9-10. The symposium topic was “The Phenomenology of Childhood,” and Johnson delivered a paper, “Developmental Science in the Lifeworld of the Child.” In addition, Johnson’s chapter, “Understanding Children’s Gender Beliefs,” was published recently in the volume Feminist Phenomenology, edited by Linda Fisher and Lester Embree (Kluwer, 2000).

Robert McCluskey, University Registrar, presented a session, “FERPA for Information Professionals,” at the annual conference of the SCT Education and Technology Association March 21.

Dan Taylor, Facilities Scheduling, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors — International. He began his term at the association’s annual conference last month in Atlanta, Ga.

Dr. Scott Wright, History Department, gave a series of Lenten talks, “The Japanese Christian Martyrs and the Japanese Faith Experience, last month at the Church of St. Mark in St. Paul. The March 2 session was titled “Background: The Japanese Faith Experience”; March 23, “The Cross and the Gun: Christianity in Japan in the Late 16th and Early 17th Centuries”; and March 30, “Shusako Endo: Japanese Christian Author.”
