St. Thomas alumna, student honored by Society of Professional Journalists

A St. Thomas alumna and a student have been honored by the Minnesota chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Jane Tigan '07 finished third in the "social issues" magazine story category of the society's annual writing contest for a fall 2007 St. Thomas magazine story, "Rooftops and bus rides," about her experience as a VISION trip leader in Venezuela. (Read the story online.) This fall, Tigan will begin a master's program in urban planning at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She is the daughter of Barb Tigan, Development.

Allison McDonald, who will be a senior at St. Thomas, received one of two $1,500 scholarships from the society. It cited her internships at KMSP-TV, KSAX-TV and the Sauk Centre Herald and her work as secretary of the society's St. Thomas student chapter. She hopes to be a television news reporter after graduation and told the society that she "can't think of anything better than working in a career that allows me to learn and share (people's) stories."
