Three St. Thomas women’s teams — softball, tennis and golf — have qualified or been selected to compete in NCAA Division III championship action in May. No other Division III institution will have teams in all three NCAA events.
The St. Thomas softball team (34-6), ranked ninth nationally, will compete May 10-12 in the five-team, double-elimination NCAA regional tournament hosted by Central College in Pella, Iowa. It’s the sixth consecutive NCAA playoff berth for the Tommies, who won the MIAC championship with a 21-1 record. The Tommies will play their first 2002 tournament game at noon Friday, May 10, against Coe College (Iowa).
The St. Thomas women’s golf team is the only MIAC institution to make the field for the10-team NCAA Division III championship. The 72-hole event will be held May 14-17 in Southampton, Mass. St. Thomas and Buena Vista (Iowa) were the lone region teams invited. It is the Tommies’ first NCAA Division III women’s golf berth in the three-year history of the event.
The St. Thomas women’s tennis team was rewarded for its 18-3 dual-meet season as it received one of 26 invitations to the NCAA Division III championship tournament. It is the first women’s tennis postseason berth for St. Thomas in nearly a decade. The team will play in a three-team regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Third-seed Luther (14-7) plays St. Thomas (18-3) on Friday, May 10, with the winner playing Gustavus on Saturday.
