The Most Rev. Frederick Campbell

The Most Rev. Frederick Campbell, a bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, was installed Sunday, Sept. 15, as rector of the St. Paul Seminary.

The installation occurred during a Mass in St. Mary’s Chapel. Archbishop Harry Flynn, chairman of the boards of St. Thomas and the seminary, was the principal celebrant.

Flynn told Campbell that his primary responsibility as seminary rector and vice president of the School of Divinity would be "to bring this community together like a pastor." Flynn asked the congregation to join in praying that God "will sustain him with grace."

Among the two-dozen priests at the Mass were two of Campbell’s predecessors as rector: the Revs. Phillip Rask (1993-2002) and Charles Froehle (1980-1993). Rask will become pastor of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maplewood this fall, and Froehle is pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Minneapolis.

Campbell is a St. Paul Seminary alumnus who was ordained in 1980. He served at parishes in St. Anthony, Hopkins and West St. Paul until his appointment as auxiliary bishop in 1999. He taught theology at St. John Vainney Seminary from 1993 to 1999.

Former seminary rectors the Revs. Phillip Rask, left, and Charles Froehle, right, attended the installation of the Most Rev. Frederick Campbell.
