Have you ever wondered what the sculpture that looks like two doughnuts is all about? It’s an unusual sculpture with a curious title and interesting mathematics to uncover. Dr. Melissa Shepard, Mathematics Department, will discuss the mathematics of the “Four Canoes” sculpture at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in 3M Auditorium, Owens Science Hall.

Shepard will explore the mathematics behind the name, sculpture and tiling in her talk, “The Mathematics of Helaman Ferguson’s ‘Four Canoes’.”

“Four Canoes” was installed outside the newly completed Frey Science and Engineering Center in fall 1997. A brief video of the installation — which took more than six hours, several large machines and half a dozen workers to complete — will be shown.
