From Information Resources and Technologies

The latest DAT (anti-virus definitions) file for our virus software, McAfee VirusScan, is causing a false positive for the "insane.dam" virus.  This means that the files that keep your virus software updated thinks your computer is infected with the insane.dam virus when it’s not.

What it looks like
There are two typical symptoms:
1. When you open Excel, your computer will report that Excel.exe is infected (when it’s not).
2. It looks like Excel is trying to install new features but fails due to lack of access to the needed files.

What you should do
1. Don’t panic.  Your files are neither infected nor lost.
2. Let IRT know.  (Call or send an e-mail to the Tech Desk, talk to your academic technician)  We’ll dispatch a technician to install the fix that corrects this McAfee VirusScan problem.

If you have any questions, please let us know.  You can contact the IRT Tech Desk at (651) 962-6230.
