Festival Orchestra Concert Tonight Features top Student Talent

The St. Thomas Music Department will present its Festival Orchestra concert at 8 p.m. today, Monday, April 4, in Brady Educational Center auditorium. This is a high-caliber evening of music during which St. Thomas' best student musicians perform in front of a seasoned professional 30-piece orchestra.

The program will feature student soloists who were chosen to be included in the Festival Orchestra program through a competitve process - only a small number are accepted each year.

Selections from the program:

  • Andrew Ferriss, trumpet, will perform "Trumpet Concerto in Eb," movement I. Allegro, by Jan K.J. Neruda.
  • Mark Thomas, tenor, will perform "Dies Natalis," movements II. Rhapsody and V. The Salutation, by Gerald Finz.
  • Jon Dostal, marimba, will perform "Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra," movements II. Lamento and I. Saudação, by Ney Rosauro.
  • Matthew Potter, alto saxophone, will perform "Tableaux de Provence," movements IV.  Dis Alyscamps, L'amo Souspire and I. Farandoulo di Chatouno, by Paule Maurice.
  • Raluca Sorina Boac, piano, will perform "Piano Concerto No. 1 in C, Op. 5," movement I. Allegro con brio, by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The concert will be conducted by Dr. Matthew George.
