University of St. Thomas undergraduates who are participating in the McNair Scholars Program will present their research at the program’s fourth annual poster session and holiday celebration on Thursday, Dec. 8. The celebration will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 108 (often called “The Leather Room”) of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center.
All members of the St. Thomas community are invited; refreshments will be served.
The McNair scholars will present research posters on topics dealing with biology, economics, education, environmental science, geography, political science, psychology and social work. Seven current McNair scholars have spent the past summer and fall engaged in research; some already have presented their work at conferences across the nation.
Now heading into its fifth year at St. Thomas, the McNair Scholars Program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and matching funds from the university. The program encourages low-income/first-generation undergraduate students, especially those from groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate schools, to continue their education and ultimately to receive their Ph.D.s.
In recent years, St. Thomas’ McNair scholars have gone on to graduate studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Loyola University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Queens University, Ontario.
