For the third year in a row, St. Thomas has ranked high nationwide in the number of students studying abroad. Among U.S. master’s institutions, St. Thomas had the second highest number of students abroad during 2000-2001 when 682 studied outside the country. During 2001-2002, 735 students studied in semester, yearlong and short-term programs.
One of the factors for this popularity at St. Thomas is the growth of faculty participation in directing short-term and semester programs abroad. The newest program is the Glasgow English Semester that begins in spring 2003. Dr. Joan Piorkowski leads a program of English majors and minors at Glasgow University in Scotland.
While Western Europe continues to host the majority of St. Thomas students, many have studied in such diverse countries as the Czech Republic, Cuba, Egypt, Ghana, Japan, Uganda and Venezuela, as well as many other non-traditional destinations.
Each year, the International Education Center at St. Thomas sponsors a photography contest. Below are some glimpses of what our students saw.
