Cleaning Up a 'Sad, Urban Lot' With Wildflowers, Science
Sustainability & EnvironmentThis month, St. Thomas senior Elizabeth Chambers, junior Hunter Gaitan, sophomore Ryan Burke and biochemistry professor Dr. Adam Kay will help plant 96 plots of wildflowers on a vacant gravel pit in downtown St. Paul for their research study, The Helpful Flowers Project. The team will study biodiversity and how wildflowers remove toxic heavy metals from soil.

Mathematics Through the Lens of Biology
Until recently, many biologists also viewed themselves as pure experimentalists with no need for mathematics in their field, but advances in experimental techniques have generated huge amounts of data, and without mathematical modeling and analysis it would be impossible for biology to make sense of all these data. -

Students Aim to Bring 'Life,' in More Ways Than One, to Africa
University NewsSeniors Samali Mutazindwa and Netsanet Negussie, and Mathew Vicknair '13 are working to bring their program, Maysha, which means "life" in Swahili, to underserved communities in East Africa. The program will focus on health care literacy and malaria intervention. -

Three Juniors Honored by Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program
University NewsRyan Augustin, a junior majoring in biochemistry, was awarded a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, an award that honors outstanding students who plan to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Juniors Elizabeth Annoni and Mark Painter were named honorable mentions.
