Dr. Michael Winter, associate professor in the Philosophy Department, will speak on “Virtue and Good Intentions” at this month’s Philosophy Colloquium. He will speak from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts. Everyone is welcome.
Winter’s lecture examines the question: Does acting virtuously require having good intentions? Some have thought that Huckleberry Finn presents a counter-example to the traditional view that good intentions are necessary for virtuous action. Winter will look at Huck’s decision about his friend Jim to see whether individuals should abandon the traditional understanding of the relation between virtue and good intentions.
