Dr. Don Briel, Koch Chair in Catholic Studies and director of the Center for Catholic Studies, will present a lecture on “Why Newman Matters” on Tuesday, March 1.
Free and open to the public, this inaugural event of the new Thought and Culture lecture series will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.
Briel is a widely respected Newman scholar. This lecture marks Pope Benedict XVI’s beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman on Sept. 19, 2010. Newman (1801-1890) was an English convert, priest, cardinal, theologian, controversialist, novelist and poet.
