You may have studied abroad yourself as an undergraduate, spent time overseas conducting research or currently teach in one of our 30 off-campus programs. As a faculty or staff adviser to St. Thomas students, you play a key role in encouraging them to study abroad while they make progress toward their degrees.
The Study Abroad office reminds advisers that the 2013 spring semester application deadline is Monday, Oct. 1. Although first-year students are not eligible to study abroad next spring, they are eligible to study for a semester or yearlong in the fall of their sophomore year, and it is very beneficial to start planning early. The J-Term 2013 application deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 3.
First-year students are eligible to apply for J-Term programs that do not require prerequisites or for which they have already fulfilled prerequisites. Some examples are Archaeology and History in Rome, The Natural History and Conservation Biology of Tanzania and East Africa, or Experience Korea: Two States Remembering One Nation. Students can visit the Study Abroad website to see other courses that still have space available and submit their applications online.
The Study Abroad website now features an advising tool with essential information about study abroad to share with advisees as well as information specific to common majors. You may find that students have misperceptions about Study Abroad that may serve as a hindrance. The website highlights some of the common myths on study abroad and details which programs work best for certain majors and minors.

The Study Abroad office currently is hosting the annual International Education Photo Contest to raise campus awareness about studying abroad. The contest seeks photos from St. Thomas students who participated in a St. Thomas-affiliated study-abroad, work or volunteer overseas program. Photos should be submitted in digital form, with a completed entry form, by Monday, Oct. 15, via email to the Study Abroad Office with “Photo Contest” typed in the subject line. Winning photographers will receive cash prizes between $50 and $100.
