Allies to hold information meeting today for upcoming National Day of Silence
The University of St. Thomas Allies will hold an information meeting at 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 22, in Room 152, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, to discuss the upcoming National Day of Silence.
Allies is participating in the 12th annual National Day of Silence, which will be held this year on Friday, April 25. The event is held to bring attention to anti-LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools.
This year's National Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a California 8th grader who was shot and killed Feb. 12 by a classmate because of King's sexual orientation and gender expression.
Students and teachers throughout the United States will come together Friday to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. It is called the Day of Silence because many students participate by taking a vow of silence for all or part of the day.
Those attending this evening's Allies' meeting will receive more information about the event as well as participation cards. Free pizza will be provided. For more information e-mail Tom Kling.
