Association for Strategic Planning hosts speaker Feb. 19

The Association for Strategic Planning announces its next event in the 2008 breakfast series.

Stuart Jackson, a vice president with L.E.K. Consulting, will speakon topics from his book, Where Value Hides: A New Way to UncoverProfitable Growth for Your Business, on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Room 202, Opus Hall, on the Minneapolis campus (see campus map with parking locations).

The schedule:

  • 7 a.m. – registration
  • 7:15 a.m. – breakfast
  • 7:45-9 a.m. – speaker

Forget what you've learned about traditional market segmentation, especially the part where it says that greater market share equals higher profitability. In his new book, Where Value Hides: A New Way to Uncover Profitable Growth for Your Business (Wiley, November 2006), Jackson says that bigger isn't necessarily better. In many instances, he contends, it can be worse. Jackson notes that, as most companies use it, market share can be a misleading and dangerous measure. He writes that the trick lies in being able to identify the right market segments in which to focus efforts and improve one's Strategic Market Position, or SMP.

Jackson has more than 20 years of consulting experience, starting with L.E.K. Consulting in London before taking over as head of the firm's Chicago office a decade ago. He has extensive experience in helping established companies and new businesses achieve growth and increase their profitability. That experience includes working with CEOs and CFOs in a range of industries including medical products, retailing, consumer and industrial goods.

Jackson received a bachelor of arts degree with honors in engineering from Cambridge University-Emmanuel College, where he also earned an M.A. in manufacturing. He was awarded a NATO Fellowship to INSEAD Business School, France, where he received an M.B.A. with distinction.
