Campus Life presents Winter Welcome activities 2006

Tuesday, Jan. 31

  • Welcome back dinner in the cafeteria. Use your meal plan to enjoy the food in the Student Dining Room.

Wednesday, Feb. 1

  • Black History Month Film Series, Part I: “February One.” This film will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Scooter’s. This documentary tells the story of four college students who initiated lunch counter sit-ins on Feb. 1, 1960, in Greensboro, N.C., which challenged public accommodation customs and laws in that state and provided a blueprint for nonviolent civil rights protests across the South and the nation in the 1960s.

Thursday, Feb. 2

  • Chili feed at noon in Foley Plaza. Sponsored by STAR (St. Thomas Activities and Recreation). Come outside to warm up and to enjoy free chili as long as it lasts!

Friday, Feb. 3

  • Welcome Back Dance at 8 p.m. in Scooter’s. Tickets are available in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center – all proceeds go to Up ’Til Dawn for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Sponsored by Grace Hall.
  • Fanamaniac event: Men’s hockey game at 7 p.m. at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.

Saturday, Feb. 4

  • Trip to the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Sponsored by STAR. Sign up in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, for this free trip to see the ice sculptures and torchlight parade. A bus will leave the arches at 5 p.m. and return by 8 p.m., with free pizza afterward in Scooter's.

Monday, Feb. 6 

  • Multicultural Monday – free M&Ms available in the Commuter Center.
  • Yoga and kickboxing start. More information in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Sponsored by the Wellness Center and STAR.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 

  • Free hot chocolate at noon in Foley Plaza. Sponsored by STAR.
  • Koch Commons Desk grand re-opening from noon to 6 p.m. Drawings for great prizes to be held each hour.

Wednesday, Feb. 8

  • Black History Month Film Series, Part II: “At the River I Stand.” This film will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Scooter’s. Its movie-jacket cover says that the film documents “two eventful months during the Civil Rights Movement in 1968 and demonstrates the connection between the struggle for civic and economic rights.”

Friday, Feb. 10

  • Dinner and ice skating at the Depot in Minneapolis. Tickets available at the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Sponsored by STAR.

  • Fanamaniac event: Women’s hockey game at 7 p.m. at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.

Monday-Friday, Feb. 13-17

  • Healthy Relationships Week sponsored by the Wellness Center.

Tuesday, Feb. 14

  • Fruity Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon in the Commuter Center, with a representative from the Wellness Center available.
  • Healthy Relationships Free Screening from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Murray-Herrick Campus Center atrium.
  • Spring Activities Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the first- and second-floor atriums of Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Meet representatives from the many clubs and organizations on campus.
  • Free Valentine’s Day party starting at 7:30 p.m. in Scooter’s. Live music by Venice Maki and free ice cream. Sponsored by STAR.

Wednesday, Feb.15

  • Black History Month Film Series, Part III: “Ethnic Notions.” This film will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Scooter’s. Its movie-jacket cover says that the film “traces the evolution of the deeply rooted stereotypes that have fueled anti-Black prejudice.”
  • Mixed Blood Theatre production of Jackie Robinson in O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium at 4:45 p.m. Enjoy this free show about a famous baseball player (you can download a Mixed Blood Theatre Resource Guide for more information about Robinson). Sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and the University Lectures Committee. 

Thursday, Feb.16

  • Snow tubing trip sponsored by STAR. Sign up in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center.

Friday, Feb. 17

  • Comedy Sportz at 7:30 p.m. in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium. Free show sponsored by STAR.
  • Up ’Til Dawn, a fund-raiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, will begin at 9 p.m. in the Coughlan Field House (read a Bulletin Today review published on March 2, 2005, about UST’s fundraising efforts for the Up ’Til Dawn campaign for kids).

Saturday, Feb. 18

  • Black History Month free game show, featuring great prizes and interesting information, will be held at 7 p.m. in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium. Sponsored by STAR.
  • Free Ebony Mic at 8 p.m. in Scooter’s. All are welcome to enjoy an evening featuring the talents of poets, musicians and other performers as they share different views with the audience in a variety of ways. Sponsored by BESA (Black Empowerment Student Alliance).

Sunday, Feb. 19

  • Triple Espresso comedy (see the Hennepin Theatre District Web site that describes this performance): “Throughout the show, we discover that Hugh and his two buddies from the 1970s had far more talent than they knew what to do with ... literally. In hysterical flashbacks, they reenact their various attempts in show business.” Tickets available in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Sponsored by STAR.

Tuesday, Feb. 21

  • Free legal advice from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Life-Work Center, Minneapolis campus.      
  • Free Step Show at 7 p.m. in Brady Educational Center auditorium. The Kappas and the Alphas, two fraternities from the University of Minnesota, will perform a dynamic Step Show that includes a series of clapping and stomping to create a rhythm.  This show is a traditional ritual for these two fraternities. Sponsored by STAR.

Wednesday, Feb. 22

  • Bagel Wednesday from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Commuter Center, with information from the Personal Counseling Center.
  • Black History Month Film Series, Part IV: “Color Adjustment.” This film will be shown from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Scooter’s. Its movie-jacket cover says that the film examines more than 40 years “of race relations through the lens of prime time entertainment.”

Thursday, Feb. 23

  • Notes at Noon in the Blue Lagoon. Sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and STAR. Enjoy flute jazz music.
  • A free presentation, “Mythbusters: Do you think you can beat the PBT (Preliminary Breathalyzer Test)?” will begin at 7 p.m. in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.

Saturday, Feb. 25

  • A concert featuring the bands Standard Thompson, Finest Hour, Kingshift and Quietdrive will be held in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium. Tickets are available in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Sponsored by STAR.

Monday, Feb. 27-Friday, March 3

  • Body Image Awareness Week sponsored by the Wellness Center, Personal Counseling and Student Health Service.

Ongoing events:

  • Legal advice sessions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 1, 8 and 15, in the Commuter Center.
  • Tommies After Dark (TAD) late-night programming brought to St. Thomas students from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. every Saturday night in Koch Commons. Tommies After Dark is a great way to meet new people and spend time with friends. Free and open to all students.
  • Student Musician Series at noon Thursdays in Scooter’s. Sponsored by STAR. 
  • “Les Misérables,” touring Broadway show at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul. Tickets are available in the Box Office, lower level, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, for shows on Wednesday, Feb. 8, and Sunday, Feb. 12.
