The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, prohibits postsecondary educational institutions from disclosing the education records of students to most third parties without the student’s written consent. However, certain information is considered “directory information” and may be disclosed without consent. It is important that students understand what personal data is protected and the additional action that must be taken if additional protection is desired.
Following multiple reports of sexual misconduct allegations, the University of St. Thomas has rescinded the Distinguished Alumni Award given to David Haas in 1995 and is no longer playing Mr. Haas’ music.
St. Thomas President Julie Sullivan released the following statement in response to Tuesday’s news that the U.S. government has agreed to rescind Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) rules, which would have barred international students from remaining in the U.S. if their colleges and universities were forced to move classes completely online due to COVID-19.
