Celebrate National Library Week

Celebrate National Library Week

By Julie Kimlinger

It’s National Library Week and the UST libraries invite one and all to celebrate – in person and online.

Daily online Trivia Contest – Reference librarian Eric Kallas has come up with five great questions – one each day for you to research during Library Week. One winner will be chosen from all who send in correct responses by the daily deadline. Check the Library Week Web page for Trivia Contest rules.

Daily online voting for the winner of the Primp my Book Cart contest! Fashioned after the popular “Pimp my Ride” TV show, library staff and student assistants have teamed up, department against department, to come up with some great book carts – but they need your help to be declared the winner. Check the Library Week Web page for details on voting for the Primp my Book Cart winner.

What’s happening at the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library?

Author Readings and Book Signings begin and end the week in the O’Shaughnessy Room:

  • At 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, meet and hear Leslie Adrienne Miller read from and discuss her latest book, The Resurrection Trade.
  • At noon Friday, April 20, meet John Nemo, who will read from and discuss his baseball novel, The King’s Game.

“Remote Access: Distant Libraries in the World” will be presented by media librarian Cindy Badilla-Melendez. You’ll have two opportunities to see this great video about library service in parts of the world far different from our own. See the 25-minute video at 12:15 and 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in the O’Shaughnessy Room. Refreshments will be provided. If you have questions about the video, please call Cindy, 962-5464.

UST Authors’ Open House and Reception: Beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, more than 150 members of the UST community will showcase their publications from the past year. Stop by and congratulate your faculty and staff colleagues on their work and browse the display. Bibliographies will be provided to anyone who wishes. Refreshments will be provided.

The Annual Library Week Book Sale will be held each day – noon to 6 p.m. – just outside the O’Shaughnessy Room on first floor of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center. Stop by and find some great bargains.

Take the Library of Congress EZ Quiz and earn a chance to win a great prize. Stop by the Circulation Desk to try the interactive software that teaches you how to find library books using that strange-looking Library of Congress call number. Everyone who tries gets a little prize, and those who ace the tutorial will have their name entered in the drawing to win the big prize.

Enjoy the Pictogram Puzzles posted along the public access computers on first floor of the library. They’ll be changed every day – see if you can decipher the titles of these favorite books of your library staff.

At the Ireland Library:

Throughout Library Week you’ll be able to browse and shop the Book Sale at the Ireland Library. A special feature of the Ireland Library’s Book Sale is its popular Silent Auction of incredibly fine reference and theology items. The auction ends at noon on Friday, April 20, so don’t miss it. If you have questions about the Ireland Library book sale please call Betsy Polakowski, (651) 962-5452.

On the Minneapolis campus:

Come to the Annual Library Week Book Sale each day at the Charles J. Keffer Library during regular library hours. If you finished your spring cleaning early, find great books to restock your home and office shelves.

Roving librarians will wander the Minneapolis campus during Library Week with wireless laptops in tow. Ask us a reference question or a fun question and get a sweet reward.

Library staff from Keffer and Schoenecker libraries will host the second annual Bookend Miniature Golf Tournament from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19. Call Andrea Hudson, (651) 962-4647, for details on this and other Keffer Library events.
