Center for Applied Mathematics to host final spring colloquium May 2
The Center for Applied Mathematics' spring colloquium series will conclude with "Future Health Insurance Costs – An Actuarial Perspective," presented by Eric Barrette of the University of Minnesota and Nancy Barker Walczak of Reden and Anders, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in 3M Auditorium, Owens Science Hall.
The presentation will begin with refreshments at 2:45 p.m.
In the health insurance field, uncertainty exists related to the type, magnitude and number of claims incurred in a given period. This uncertainty is magnified with the introductions of new medical technologies. This presentation will examine how future health insurance costs can be projected based on health care cost and utilization data. A specific example demonstrates how actuarial science, statistics, epidemiology, economics, and public policy are used in constructing a model of per member per month costs of an emerging cancer treatment.
