Dr. Terence Langan has been named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas, it was announced by Dr. Susan Huber, executive vice president and chief academic officer.

Langan, who has served as associate dean of the College of Arts and Science for the past six years, will become interim dean in June when Dr. Marisa Kelly, dean here since 2006, leaves to become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ithaca College in New York.
“I am very pleased that Dr. Langan has accepted the position of interim dean for the College of Arts and Sciences,” Huber said. “He comes to the position with a reputation as an effective, hard-working associate dean.
“His six years in office have provided him with a specific set of skills and an insider's knowledge of the dean's job that should ensure a smooth transitional year. Please join me in congratulating Terry.”
A search committee for the permanent dean of the college will be assembled in May. The position will be advertised in September and applicants will be interviewed in February 2012. It is expected that a new dean will be announced in April 2012.
Langan has taught or served as an administrator at St. Thomas for the past 21 years. A native of Marshall, Minn., he graduated with a double major in mathematics and economics from St. John’s University in Collegeville. While working on his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Minnesota, he taught two years at St. Thomas as an adjunct faculty member.
He began teaching full-time here in 1990 in the Economics Department, and later chaired the department for four and a half years.
Langan’s first full-time teaching position out of graduate school was at Miami University, and during the 1996-1997 academic year he taught at University College Cork in Ireland.
During his years at St. Thomas he has served as faculty secretary and on the Educational Policy Committee, Fringe Benefits Advisory Committee, Budget Advisory Committee and various ad hoc committees. He was an inaugural member of the university’s Tuesday afternoon faculty-staff golf league.
“After 21 years at St. Thomas, I am excited to take on new challenges and work more closely with Dr. Huber, the office of Academic Affairs, and other St. Thomas deans,” Langan said. “I’m looking forward to continued collaboration with the hardworking department chairs, program directors and the talented faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences.”
Langan and his wife, Loren, have four children and make their home in Mahtomedi.
The College of Arts and Sciences is home to 22 of the university’s undergraduate and graduate departments and many interdisciplinary programs.
