English Department announces freshman essay contest winners

From the English Department

Congratulations to the students listed below for submitting the best essay in their respective categories for this year's English Department essay contest. The contest was open to all first-year students enrolled in 100-level English courses during the 2008-09 academic year. Each winner will be awarded $75.

The winners and the titles of their papers are:

  • Stephanie Harnan, "Incongruously Inspired," an essay about Tracy Kidder's nonfiction book, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, the Man Who Would Cure the World. This essay was written for Dr. Erika Scheurer's ENGL 110 course.
  • Janine Karas, "The Wallpaper," an essay about Todd Boss' poem of that same title found in his poetry collection, "Yellowrocket." This essay was written for Chris Hallman's ENGL 112 course.
  • Amanda Carella, "Picture Book: Art (Spiegelman) Imitating Life," an essay about Art Spiegelman's graphic novel of the Holocaust, Maus II. This essay was written for Dr. Martin Warren's ENGL 190 course.
