English Department Names Essay Contest Winners

The English Department has named Leo Fleming and Melinda Perry the first- and second-place winners in the ENGL 121 Critical Thinking: Literature and Writing essay contest.

Fleming earned first place for his essay "Of Hearts and Minds," which examined the relationship of the married couple in Rita Dove's poetry collection, "Thomas and Beulah." His essay was written for Professor Heather Bouwman. He won the first-place prize of $125.

Perry earned second place for her essay "Changes During Oppression," which examined Elie Wiesel's Night, an autobiographical account of life in Nazi concentration camps. Perry's essay was written for Professor Christine Sikorski. Perry won the second-place prize of $75.
