New Discussion Series for Female Faculty Begins Thursday

The Luann Dummer Center for Women and Faculty Development are co-sponsoring a new discussion series for female faculty. Offered about once a month, each session will address topics that impact the faculty roles of women and provide an opportunity for female faculty to share their expertise.

The first discussion,“Is Service a Trap for Female Faculty?” will be held Thursday, Oct. 13. Participants will examine a recent article in Academe, “The Ivory Ceiling of Service Work,” by Joya Mirsa, which looks at the way service work is often gendered and suggests that this gendered work may impede the ability of women to achieve promotion. This is an important topic both for those considering future promotion and for those who mentor junior colleagues or evaluate applications for promotion.

The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the women’s center, Room 103, O’Shaughnessy Educational Center. Box lunches will be served.

Faculty of all ranks are welcome. Interested in attending the discussion? Email Dr. Corrine Carvalho, who will forward the article.
