Movie night feature, 'The Great Debaters,' celebrates Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, Hana will host a movie night tomorrow featuring “The Great Debaters,” starring Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker. The movie will be  shown at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the auditorium, Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts.

A short discussion will follow the movie to foster deeper understanding of Black History Month. Popcorn and beverages will be provided.

“The Great Debaters” is a drama based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a professor at Wiley College, Texas (played by Washington). In 1935, Tolson inspired students from this all African-American school to form its first debate team, which went on to challenge the Harvard elite in the national championship and provide a seed that helped spark the civil rights movement.

Students in Sociology 251: Race and Ethnicity can obtain extra credit for attending this event.
