In the News: Manjeet Rege on Using Geofencing to Improve Public Safety

Manjeet Rege, a professor in the College of Engineering, spoke with KARE 11 and FOX 9 about how technology could help address safety concerns after hundreds of electric scooter and e-bike riders gathered in downtown Minneapolis. Rege explained how geofencing could create virtual boundaries that slow or stop scooters from entering highways and other restricted areas.

Professor Manjeet Rege, a Software Engineering and Data Science professor at the University of St. Thomas, says the city of Minneapolis could use geofencing to create imaginary boundaries to keep electric scooters out of certain areas.

“Geofencing is a location-based technology that creates a virtual boundary from GPS coordinates. In certain places, it can bring the scooter to a complete halt, like if they enter the freeway or another high-traffic area,” Professor Rege said.

Geofence boundaries can also be used to enforce speed limits and put limits on the number of scooters in a designated area.

“Now that we have learned from this experience, that is something that could be implemented for sure,” Professor Rege said.
