Judge Charles R. Wilson, 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, will speak on “The State of Capital Punishment in the U.S. Courts” at a public forum on Monday, Feb. 21.
The forum will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Grand Schulze Atrium of the School of Law on the Minneapolis campus. Lunch will be served to those who register here by e-mail by Monday, Feb. 14. The forum, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by the Terrence J. Murphy Institute for Catholic Thought, Law and Public Policy. CLE credit has been applied for.
Judge Charles R. Wilson
Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Wilson was sworn in as a circuit judge in 1999 for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which hears appeals from district courts in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Prior to this appointment, he was the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Florida, where he served as a member of Attorney General Janet Reno’s Advisory Committee.
Earlier Wilson served as a U.S. magistrate judge, a county judge and an assistant county attorney in Florida. He was in private practice in Tampa as a solo practitioner in Florida for five years.
Wilson currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the Notre Dame Law School, the American Bar Association’s Council on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar, and the American Law Institute. He also serves as a member of the Codes of Conduct Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States, responsible for providing advice and guidance to United States judges on ethics issues.
Wilson received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 (A.B.) and 1979 (J.D.). He was given the Most Productive Young Lawyer Award by the Hillsborough County Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Governors of the Young Lawyer’s Division of the Florida Bar Association and was elected president of the Young Lawyer’s Section of the Hillsborough County Bar Association.
