'Mixing Small- and Large-Group Discussion' is topic of workshops Oct. 16 and 17

The Faculty Development Center will offer "Mixing Small- and Large-Group Discussion," a workshop with Dr. Stephen Brookfield, on the following dates:

  • 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Room 417, Opus Hall, Minneapolis campus
  • 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Room 115, McNeely Hall, St. Paul campus

The registration deadline for both sessions is Thursday, Oct. 11. To register, e-mail Pat Alexander.

Faculty know the scenario – students have been engaged vigorously in small-group discussion on a topic set by the teacher and then the small groups come together to continue the discussion in a whole-class format. The result: total silence. In this workshop, Brookfield will explore different ways (newsprint dialogue, quotes to affirm and challenge, structured silence, etc.) to move from small-group discussion to large-group discussion with a minimum of awkward silence.
