National Public Radio Editor Ron Elving to Speak Here March 26 as Part of Minnesota Public Radio Series

Ron Elving, the senior Washington editor for National Public Radio, will discuss the Republican nomination process and the network’s plans for the rest of the 2012 presidential race at 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the auditorium of O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the St. Paul campus of the University of St. Thomas.

Elving will be interviewed by Mike Mulcahy, Minnesota Public Radio’s political editor.

The program is part of Minnesota Public Radio’s 2011-2012 Broadcast Journalist Series, which is co-sponsored by St. Thomas' College of Arts and Sciences and its Communication and Journalism Department.

As Washington editor, Elving directs NPR’s coverage of the nation's capital and national politics and provides on-air political analysis for many NPR programs.

He can be heard regularly on “Talk of the Nation” and the podcast “It’s All Politics,” and writes the "Watching Washington" column on NPR.org.

Before joining NPR in 1999, Elving served as political editor for USA Today and for Congressional Quarterly. He came to Washington in 1984 as a Congressional Fellow with the American Political Science Association and worked for two years as a staff member in the House and Senate. Previously, Elving served as a reporter and state capital bureau chief for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

His book, Conflict and Compromise: How Congress Makes the Law, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1995. Recently, Elving contributed the chapter "Fall of the Favorite: Obama and the Media" to James Thurber's 2011 Obama in Office: The First Two Years.

Elving teaches public policy in the School of Public Administration at George Mason University and also has taught at Georgetown University, American University and Marquette University.
