The University of St. Thomas welcomes the public to two Music Department performances and one workshop in October.
Faculty Recital: Dr. David Jenkins, organ
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in St. Mary’s Chapel at the St. Paul Seminary / free
Dr. David Jenkins, organ and harpsichord, will present works of Alain, Bach and Boehm in this faculty recital. The performance is free. Jenkins will be joined by Jane Garvin, flute, to perform Trois Mouvements for flute and organ by Jehan Alain, and Sonata No. 3 in A Major for flute and harpsichord by J.S. Bach. St. Mary’s Chapel, 2260 Summit Ave. in St. Paul, is home to a 22-stop mechanical action pipe organ built by Fritz Noack.
Minnesota Orff Chapter Workshop: Michael Chandler
9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Room 304, Murray-Herrick Campus Center
Participants in this workshop will experience elemental music making in the elementary classroom using the most basic processes of Orff Schulwerk, including imitation, exploration, labeling and improvisation. This sequence will be examined by using and combining the Orff Schulwerk media: speech, singing, moving, body percussion and instrument playing. Participants will tour Keetman’s Elementaria and experience real-world applications to the use of the various sections within this primary source material. If you have access to a copy of Keetman’s Elementaria, bring it along with your soprano recorder.
UST Choirs and Bands Concert
2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis / free
This UST Choirs and Bands Concert features the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Festival Choir, conducted by Dr. Angela Broeker, in a performance of works by Adams, Bjella, Dickau, Gibbs, Handel, McGlynn and Schickele. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Matthew George, will perform the world premiere performance of Oneiric Discourse (Concertante for tenor saxophone and wind ensemble), with composer Jesús Santandreu as soloist. The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Douglas Orzolek, also will feature works by Clarke, Jenkins and Whitacre.
