Ciresi will speak about two of his historical cases – tobacco and Bhopal.

In “The Tobacco Litigation” (state of Minnesota and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Minnesota v. Phillip Morris Inc., et al), Ciresi represented the state of Minnesota and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Minnesota against the tobacco industry, leading to a $7 billion settlement.

In “The Bhopal Litigation” (Government of India v. Union Carbide) he was the lead counsel for the government of India. He sought recompense for damages arising from the disaster that occurred when methyl isocyanate gas was discharged from the Union Carbide India Ltd. plant in Bhopal, India, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths, thousands of injuries and major property damage. The case eventually was settled in 1987 in India for $470 million.

A 1968 St. Thomas graduate and member of the St. Thomas Board of Trustees, Ciresi is one of the country’s top trial lawyers and a partner at Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi. He represents individuals, corporations and government entities in the areas of product liability, intellectual property, business and commercial litigation.
