Princeton Review's 2008 college survey names UST among 'Best in the Midwest'

The University of St. Thomas is one of 161 colleges and universities designated as 'Best in the Midwest' in the Princeton Review's 2008 survey of college students distributed last week.

The survey of 120,000 students at 366 colleges rated the schools on "everything from profs to financial aid," according to Princeton Review, a New York City-based company known for test-preparation courses, education services and books. It is not affiliated with Princeton University.

Rankings of schools in 50 other categories are included in the new edition of the Princeton Review/Random House book, Best 366 Colleges, now available in bookstores and at selected newsstands throughout the country. The book's ranking lists also are posted at www.PrincetonReview.com.

In addition to regional rankings, the Princeton Review survey includes other categories, such as "Happiest Students," "Top Party School," "Toughest to Get Into" and others, and provides anecdotal reports on each of the schools listed.

St. Thomas' listing in the guide includes student reports of the university as "homogeneous," "preppy" and religious, with an "ungodly strict" alcohol policy but possessing "an excellent sense of community" and one of the best study-abroad programs in the nation.

Other Minnesota schools included named to Princeton Review's 2008 "Best in the Midwest" list are: Augsburg, Carleton, Crown College, Gustavus Adolphus, Macalester, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, North Central University, St. Mary's University, St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, St. Catherine, University of Minnesota (Morris, Twin Cities and Crookston campuses) and Winona State University.
