On May 11, the Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics presented the 18th Annual Stakeholder Dialogue: "Ethics Education in Business and Law: A Kind of Soulcraft?" The featured speaker was Matthew Crawford, author of the award-winning book Shop Class as Soulcraft. Dr. Michael Naughton, Moss Chair in Catholic Social Thought, and Neil Hamilton of the UST School of Law were respondents. Dr. Daryl Koehn, professor of ethics and business law, was master of ceremonies for the evening. Co-sponsors were the Veritas Institute and the Center for Ethical Business Cultures.
Crawford is a philosopher and a mechanic. He is a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia, and he runs a motorcycle repair business in Richmond, Va. Shop Class as Soulcraft was named a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2009, a Vanity Fair Top Ten Book of 2009, as well as an Editor’s Choice by Financial Times and Popular Mechanics. It was named a best book of 2009 by Publisher’s Weekly, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Christian Science Monitor. The Wall Street Journal named it a holiday book recommendation, and it won the Borders Original Voices Award for Nonfiction.
