In May, the Opus College of Business will present the Julie Hays Teaching Award in honor of Dr. Julie Hays. Hays was a member of St. Thomas’ Decision Sciences Department and was vice chair of the Opus College of Business faculty. She died suddenly on Nov. 11, 2007. Hays was known among her colleagues for her creative approach to teaching. The Julie Hays Teaching Award was proposed by the Opus College of Business teaching committee as a means of honoring her by recognizing faculty members who exemplify her commitment to teaching and learning.
“The University of St. Thomas is a teaching university where faculty research is also valued. Julie Hays exemplified values we share as scholar-teachers,” said Dean Christopher Puto. “This award is designed to recognize the high caliber of teaching embodied in our commitment to students.” Julie Hays Teaching Award winners will receive a $1,000 award and a plaque. All full-time faculty at the undergraduate and graduate level who have taught in the Opus College of Business for at least three years are eligible for this award. Nominees should demonstrate exceptional dedication as well as extraordinary skills and success at enhancing students’ abilities to think critically, act wisely and advance the common good by educating students and working professionals to become effective, ethical business leaders and to be constructive contributors to society. Nominations can be made by students, alumni or faculty. The nomination deadline for the second annual Julie Hays Teaching Award is Feb. 15, 2011.
