REAL Project and summer Academy students invite you to help with service project

Members of this year's Reaching Excellence in Academics and Leadership (REAL) Project and Summer Academy invite you to help with their summer service project.

The Summer Academy and REAL Project, are a six-week program sponsored by UST Multicultural Student Services and the mathematics, biology, engineering, quantitative methods and computer science, chemistry, and biology departments. The combined program enrolls a select group of 29 students of color, immigrants and women who will attend St. Thomas in the fall. They take classes, learn about campus services and attend workshops to prepare them for their new lives as St. Thomas students.

On Friday, July 8, the REAL Project and Summer Academy students will visit Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a Christian nonprofit organization that produces food for people in developing nations and ships it to wherever there is greatest need. REAL Project and Summer Academy students and staff will spend two hours assisting in the assembly and packing of food that will be shipped to countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Lesotho, Liberia, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Cambodia, East Timor, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia to aid in hunger-relief efforts.

Over the next three weeks the REAL Project and Summer Academy will conduct a drive within the St. Thomas community for household/office  supplies and monetary donations for FMSC. Drop off donations in the Multicultural Student Services office, Room 106, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. July 6-July 20.

REAL Project and Summer Academy invites you to donate the following items (no food, please; FMSC produces its own food to meet international shipping and nutrition requirements):

  • Hewlett Packard inkjet print cartridges #56, #57, #96 and #97
  • Cases or reams of copy paper
  • Paper towel
  • Laundry detergent
  • Hand Sanitizer

Monetary donations also are welcome. Cash or checks made payable to "Feed My Starving Children" are acceptable. (If you write a check, please note that the donation is tax-deductible and a form will be sent to you via mail from FMSC). A small donation goes a long way:

  • $10 will provide 60 meals
  • $25 will provide 150 meals
  • $50 will provide 300 meals
  • $100 will provide 600 meals
