Colleges Against Cancer Hosts Relay for Life, Promotes Event With Luminaria and T-shirt Sale

Colleges Against Cancer, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society, will host its third annual Relay for Life of the Tommies and Katies on Saturday, April 30, in the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex field house.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser that promotes the American Cancer Society's goal of finding a cure for cancer and recognizing cancer patients and survivors in the community. In addition, the goal of the Tommies' and Katies' event, notes Katie Metzger, Relay for Life online chair, “is to promote the fight against cancer, advocate for more education and research about this disease and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived cancer, while also paying tribute to lost loved ones.”

In order to motivate students to join Relay for Life, Colleges Against Cancer is offering an opportunity for students to donate $10 to the American Cancer Society and receive Colleges Against Cancer T-shirts and luminarias. The luminarias are paper bags that will be lighted in honor of the occasion and decorated with pictures or drawings to honor those who have been affected by cancer, all of which will be lighted in a special luminaria celebration at the relay.

The luminaria and T-shirt sale will be held in The Grill in Murray-Herrick Campus Center during convo hour today, Tuesday, April 12, and in the upper quad during convo hour on Thursday, April 14.

“Help us celebrate Relay for Life and fight the battle against cancer,” Metzger said. “Please see us for your chance to contribute to the relay and its efforts to inspire hope for cancer patients and survivors. We will bring samples of luminarias so that you can see what people have done in the past to decorate the bags for family and friends."
