Search now in third week for freshman Daniel Zamlen

The search for missing University of St. Thomas freshman Daniel Zamlen is in its third week and volunteers are still welcome to assist in the effort.

Zamlen, 19, has not been heard from since he was talking to friends on his cell phone shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, April 5. At the time, he was believed to have been walking along Mississippi River Boulevard near St. Clair Avenue.

So far more than 1,200 searchers have been involved in the effort since a group of students first fanned out through the neighborhood the day that Dan went missing.

At least two more busloads of Iron Range volunteers, one on Wednesday and another on Saturday, will join students and searchers from the Twin Cities this week. The Iron Range buses stop to pick up volunteers in Eveleth, Virginia and Mountain Iron. Dan is the son of Dale and Sally Zamlen of Eveleth.

Students who would like to help are asked to check in at the search operations center located in Room 154 of Murray-Herrick Campus Center. Students are asked to not skip classes, but to plan searches around their class schedules. The center is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Searchers are sent out to look between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Volunteers from off campus and out of town who would like to help should call the center at (651) 962-6129.

Volunteers continue to visit and distribute information to businesses and homes in the area. They also are looking in area parks, including those along the river.

On Saturday, a group of 28 students participated in the annual spring cleanup of the Mississippi River banks from the Lake Street to Ford Parkway bridges. While they found 31 bags of trash, they didn't happen to find one thing they also were looking for that day, Dan's still-missing iPhone.

Members of the St. Thomas community are asked to continue to remember Dan and his family their prayers. A prayer service for Dan will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the Florance Chapel of the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas.
