Two seniors join Teach For America

Two St. Thomas seniors will join Teach For America this fall. Julia Lucas will teach English in Baltimore; Eileen Ward will teach elementary school in Hawaii. They have elected to spend the next two years teaching students in low-income communities and become part of an effort to ensure more students have access to an excellent education.

Nationally, more than 25,000 people applied to be part of the 2008 Teach For America corps. About 20 percent were accepted.

Since 1990, thirteen St. Thomas alumni have joined Teach For America.

Since its founding in 1990, Teach For America has become the nation’s largest provider of teachers for low-income communities. This year, about 5,000 corps members are teaching in 26 urban and rural areas across the country, collectively reaching about 440,000 students.
