UST crew teams finish one-two at Upper Midwest Collegiate Championships
The University of St. Thomas men’s and women’s crew teams placed one-two as they traveled to Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., to compete in last weekend's Upper Midwest Collegiate Championships. Fifteen schools participated, including the University of Kansas, the University of Missouri, Drake University, Oklahoma City University and Wichita State University.
The men’s team took first place in every event they entered. The top varsity 4+ finished in first place with the fastest 4+ time. Their win was followed by first and third place finishes in the men’s pair. To end the day the men's team took home the gold in the varsity 8+, beating Wichita in the last 500 meters of the race. These victories, paired with a second-place finish in the men’s 4+, allowed the men’s team to finish in first place and take home the overall points trophy.
The women’s team earned three third-place medals, two second-place metals and two victories in the 4+ race. Mary Hammer, Clare Naughton, Eve Commerford and Shelby Lieffers, coxed by Amanda Nomsen, had the fastest women’s 4+ time of the day, beating Division I Drake. A second place finish by the novice women's 4+ of Holly Jenniges, Kelly Madian, Kylie Gayan and Caitline O'Leary, coxed by Sarah Hansen, pushed the women into second place to Division I Creighton University in overall in team points.
