  • "Survival instinct: The restructuring of Macy's streamlines operations, but will it be enough to save the retailer's effort to create a national brand?" Star Tribune, Feb. 7, 2008. "'It hasn't gained traction in the formerly May stores, particularly the former Marshall Field's stores,' said David Brennan, head of the Center for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas.   • "Macy's cuts 950 jobs," Minnesota Public Radio, Feb. 7, 2008. "'Traditional department stores are out of sync with consumers in the 21st century,' explained University of St. Thomas retailing expert Dave Brennan.  Brennan said old-line department stores haven't learned out how to align themselves with most consumers' wallets, tastes or lifestyles. Brennan noted Macy's has failed to hang on to many former Marashall Field's and Dayton's shoppers. He said many shoppers feel Macy's just isn't as good as the stores it replaced.   • "Macy's plans consolidation; 950 MN jobs affected," Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, Feb. 6, 2008. "Minnesota shoppers have never really embraced Macy's, said Dave Brennan, co-director of the Institute for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas. 'Macy's hasn't gained traction in terms of name or merchandise. ...   • "Allina's new CPR device saves first victim," Fox 9 News, Feb. 7, 2008. And a St. Thomas employee got to the victim first: John Barron, director of UST's Service Center, recently used CPR to keep a heart attack victim alive while waiting for paramedics to arrive. While UST isn't mentioned in this story, it turns out there's more than one university connection here. It's one of those "Six Degrees of Separation" stories: The man's wife used to work at St. Thomas and Barron brushed up on his CPR training here.   Also interviewed for the story was Dr. Charles Lick, medical director of Allina Medical Transportation; he was Barron's wife's neighbor for many years.  (And Barron's wife, by the way, also works at St. Thomas: she's Liz Dussol in Academic Advising.) And Barron grew up with John Passolt, brother of Fox 9 anchor Jeff Passolt. "Don't you just love the Twin Cities?"   • "As foreclosures rise, so does help," Star Tribune, Feb. 9, 2008. "But lenders have reason to be cautious about what customers they help and what borrowers to put into foreclosures, said Dave Vang, a real estate professor at the University of St. Thomas.
