Annual Archbishop Ireland Memorial Lecture scheduled April 23
The spring 2007 Archbishop Ireland Memorial Lecture will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, in 3M Auditorium, Owens Science Hall. Sister Katarina Schuth, O.S.F., will speak on "Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes: An Emerging Phenomenon." An informal reception will follow the talk.
Schuth holds the Endowed Chair for the Social Scientific Study of Religion at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity. She will speak about her new book, Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes (Liturgical Press, 2006), which discusses one of the greatest challenges faced by those in ministry today.
During the past 20 years and continuing at an increasing rate, individual priests and lay ministers have been asked to serve two or more parishes. Through extensive research and interviews with pastors, Schuth looks at models of leadership that contribute to vital parishes as well as factors that might lead to the diminishment of vibrant parish life. Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes explores the extent of this practice and describes the life and ministry of these priests from their vantage point.
