Former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson and KSTP’s chief political reporter Tom Hauser will discuss the presidential election at the season’s opening First Friday Speaker Series program sponsored by Alumni Relations at the University of St. Thomas.

The luncheon program begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in James B. Woulfe Alumni Hall on the university’s St. Paul campus. Networking begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch is served at noon and the program ends at 1:10 p.m. Now in its 26th year, the series is returning to campus after being held at off-campus locations for many years.

The programs are open to alumni and the public. Faculty and staff can register and pay via index number using this form. The cost is $30; to register or for more information visit this website or call (651) 962-6430. The deadline to register for the Oct. 7 program is Sept. 30.

Carlson is a New York City native who began his public service career as a member of the Minneapolis City Council in the 1960s. He was a state representative from 1970-78 and was state auditor from 1978-90. A Republican, he was elected governor in 1990 and was re-elected in 1994. He holds a bachelor’s in history from Williams College and attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota.

Tom Hauser

Hauser is a Minneapolis native who has been with KSTP since 1992. He has been covering politics since 1997 and hosts the television station’s “At Issue” public affairs program on Sunday mornings. He holds a bachelor’s in journalism and political science from St. Thomas and a master’s in journalism and mass communication from Drake University.

  • March 3, Maureen Bausch, Super Bowl CEO, speaking on “Super Bowl LII.”
  • April 7, Tony Fisher, retail and health care executive, speaking on “Leadership Lessons From the Cube to the Boardroom.”
