Donations sought for family that lost home in fire

By Terry Lynn Eggert

On April 11, 2007, Carol Hagen (a 14-year UST Registrar staff member) experienced the joy of becoming a grandmother to twin girls and the heartbreak of learning that her daughter’s home had been destroyed.

Hagen’s daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Chad, along with their 3-year-old daughter, Hailey, welcomed to their family twin baby girls, Abby (4.5 pounds) and Ally (4 pounds). The babies were delivered in River Falls, Wis., but due to complications, the babies and mother were transported to United Hospital in St. Paul.

As the proud dad and “big sister” were making their way to St. Paul, the family’s home burned to the ground. Alert neighbors were able to rescue the beloved family dogs, but the cats perished. The family feels most blessed that everyone is safe and that the babies are improving daily.

The fire destroyed everything in their home. We have asked Carol and her family what items they most need while they try to secure temporary lodging so they’ll have a place to call “home” for Hailey and the babies when they are released from the hospital.

If you would like to assist this family, these items (new or slightly used) would be most appreciated:

  • Size 4T girls clothes for Hailey
  • Dora the Explorer clothes and/or toys
  • Hailey likes small dinosaurs, chubby baby dolls with pacifiers, butterflies, or numbers on T-shirts
  • Any toy / item appropriate for a 3-year-old girl
  • Kitchen supplies (towels, utensils, baking pans, measuring cups, glasses, etc)
  • Bathroom supplies
  • Gift cards (Target, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, etc.)
  • Monetary donations

A collection box has been set up in Aquinas Hall, in the Academic Affairs lobby space. For more information contact Terry Lynn Eggert, (651) 962-6709, or tleggert@stthomas.edu.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and consideration of this family.
