Faculty: Register by Thursday for workshop, 'Getting Students to Participate in Discussion'

The Center for Faculty Development will host a workshop next week for St. Thomas faculty members. Dr. Stephen Brookfield of the UST School of Education will present "Getting Students to Participate in Discussion" in sessions Sept. 24 and 25.

There are many reasons students don't speak in discussion – a fear of looking foolish, mistrust of the teacher, racial and cultural suspicion, inadequate preparation and an introverted learning style are just some of the reasons. This workshop will explore how to get students to participate in discussion by using a number of structured discussion exercises. Participants will be introduced to and practice some of these exercises and others will be contained in the workshop packet.

Choose one of the following sessions:

  • 2:30-4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in Room 417, Opus Hall, Minneapolis campus
  • 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Room 155, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, St. Paul campus

The registration deadline for both sessions is Thursday, Sept. 20. E-mail Pat Alexander with your name and location of the workshop you would like to attend.
