University Honors Longtime Coach, Director of Athletics With Steve Fritz Court Dedication Wednesday

The St. Thomas community is invited to join the Alumni Association tomorrow as it honors director of athletics and former men’s basketball head coach Steve Fritz ’71, with the dedication of the Schoenecker Arena court as the “Steve Fritz Court.” The dedication will take place during halftime of the Tommie-Johnnie men’s basketball game Wednesday, Feb. 1.

As a student and a three-time all-MIAC performer, Fritz helped lead the Tommies to two conference titles from 1967 to 1971, and he won the coveted, student-voted “Mr. Tommy” award in 1971.

Now in his 20th year as director of athletics, Fritz has seen Tommie athletes sweep the MIAC men’s and women’s all-sport championships in the last four seasons, capture five NCAA team titles in baseball (2001, 2009), softball (2004, 2005) and men’s basketball (2011, with Fritz as the head coach), and in the past 13 years receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 53 times in 13 different sports.

The St. Thomas community is invited to attend the game to help cheer on the Tommies, the reigning NCAA Division III national champions, and to honor Fritz for four decades of leadership in athletics at St. Thomas. Student Affairs will serve cake following the game in the Athletic Hall of Fame on the second floor of the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex.
