Interested in developing a January Term UMAIE program?

Tave Reser, director, Seminars International, will be on campus next Thursday, Sept. 15, to meet with faculty interested in developing a January Term UMAIE course. Contact Sarah Spencer, International Education, if you would like to schedule an appointment.

Call for UMAIE proposals – January or June 2007 – deadline is Friday, Oct. 14, 2005

As many of you know, more than 20 St. Thomas faculty teach UMAIE courses each January, and more than 200 St. Thomas undergraduate students participate in the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education (UMAIE). This consortium shares faculty and students from seven colleges and universities to create a January Term or June international curriculum, and all logistics are supported by Seminars International Inc.

Faculty planning to propose an undergraduate January Term 2006 course are strongly encouraged to work with the UMAIE consortium. The deadline for UMAIE proposals is Friday, Oct. 14, 2005. Faculty should seek support from their department chair and dean before submitting a proposal. Proposals are reviewed and approved by the University of St. Thomas Academic Review Committee for International Education (ARCIE), a faculty committee, and are forwarded to the UMAIE board of directors for final approval.

First-time faculty directors should take advantage of the following proposal support opportunities:

  1. First Steps seminar co-sponsored by ARCIE and the International Education Center: “Directing a Short-term Off-campus Program and Thoughts on Writing a Successful Proposal”

3-4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the International Education Center, 44 N. Cleveland Ave., St. Paul campus

  1. ARCIE pre-review comments – ARCIE will make pre-review comments before the final review on Oct. 14. Deadline for feedback is Saturday, Oct. 1.

For information on the proposal process, or directing short-term programs off-campus, contact Spencer, (651) 962-6452.

Note: Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, is the new proposal deadline for fall-embedded 2006/January Term 2007 UST-sponsored off-campus programs. Additional information is coming soon.
